Director - Knight Center for Specialized Journalism (University of Maryland)
The Knight Center for Specialized Journalism, one of the nation’s premier institutions devoted to the professional development of journalists, is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic individual to be its next director.

The Knight Center, which operates as part of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, conducts week-long seminars for journalists on such specialized topics as law, the sciences, religion, demographics, the business of sports and many other subjects. Since 1988, more than 2,700 fellows from 500 news organizations have been Knight Fellows. The center is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

The director oversees all aspects of the center, from constructing its programs to recruiting fellows to managing the budget. An effective director will combine substantial journalism experience with intellectual curiosity, in-depth knowledge of converged news operations, media savvy and an engaging personality.

We are looking for an innovative colleague who can both lead and contribute as our program grows and adapts to changing technology and business models in journalism. The successful candidate will be a practitioner who has a strong record of important media innovation, and who holds a bachelor’s degree or higher. This person must enjoy working collaboratively.

Visiting Assistant Professor, Magazine Journalism
SUNY College at Plattsburgh

The Journalism Department in the newly established Center for Communication and Journalism at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh invites applications for a non-tenure-track 2-l/2 year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Magazine Journalism starting spring 2009 (January). Our Magazine Journalism – the only one in SUNY – is the fastest-growing major in the journalism program. Journalism is one of the fastest-growing programs at the college, its enrollment increasing by over 150 percent in the last five years.

Responsibilities: 4/4 teaching load may include courses in the following areas: Magazine Article Writing, Travel Writing, News Writing, Introduction to Journalism, and a self-identified area of specialty. Departmental service duties include academic and career advisement for magazine majors and committee assignments. Since the focus is on teaching and service, there is no scholarship or publication requirement for this position.

Qualifications: Master’s Degree with substantial newspaper and/or magazine industry experience required. Undergraduate-level teaching experience preferred.
